If the specimen from the patient has very few or none of the villi (the
membrane of the small intestine responsible for absorbing nutrients,
please observe the top left image), and the surface is flat and bumpy
with the blood vessels being disorganized, then a blood test will tell
how well the small intestine has absorbed the substances.
